Ohio House leader: Legislator will be investigated
The Associated Press
CINCINNATI —
A legislative ethics committee will look into a civil lawsuit's fraud allegations against a southwest Ohio state legislator.
The Cincinnati Enquirer (http://cin.ci/XIWECU ) reports Ohio House Speaker William Batchelder says the joint ethics committee will investigate, although no criminal charges have been filed against Rep. Peter Beck of Mason.
A lawsuit filed last week in Hamilton County Common Pleas Court alleges Beck participated in a fraud cheating investors out of more than $1.2 million by spending their investments on non-business items including Beck's 2010 election campaign.
130th General Assembly Starts Its Work
It’s going to be a busy year at in the House, says Republican Speaker Bill Batchelder.
“Well, there’s no question. I think we’re going to see some exciting announcements this week, and I think we’re going to be looking at very important questions about the structure of state government,” says Batchelder.
Meanwhile, on the other side of the aisle, Minority Leader Armond Budish is hoping for a Democratic win in a House race in which Republican Al Landis leads Democrat Josh O’Farrell by a handful of votes – if that victory sticks, Republicans would have a supermajorities in the House and Senate. And Budish fears that could mean more controversial bills.
“Talking about things like the Heartbeat Bill, talking about things like a dozen anti-choice bills, attacks on women’s rights, attacks on voting rights, attacks on workers’ rights - we don’t need that. We need jobs. We need job creation. We need better education,” says Budish.

House Speaker Finalizing Committee Structure
The House committee structure and membership could come as early as next week as House Speaker William Batchelder (R-Medina) works to finish up his plans for the 130th General Assembly, a spokesman said Tuesday.
Mike Dittoe, a spokesman for Batchelder, said the speaker is still working on the committee structure and plans to personally contact members of the committees once he’s made the decisions on which member will serve where.
As for the committees themselves, Dittoe remarked “I suspect there will be changes to committees themselves,” but added that there likely won’t be “a significant change in the number of committees.” Some committees may be combined or added, he said, but those decisions are still being made.

House Security: The Ohio House swore in retired State Highway Patrol Colonel Richard "Butch" Collins as the chamber's sergeant-at-arms this week.
"Colonel Collins served Ohio admirably as a state trooper for many years, and I'm confident that he will continue to do so as the House sergeant-at-arms," Speaker Bill Batchelder (R-Medina) said. "We are grateful for his service and look forward to continuing to work with him in the years to come."
Mr. Collins, who served the Ohio House in a part-time capacity last session, has 31 years of experience in the patrol, including two years as superintendent. He takes the position following the retirement of former Sergeant-At-Arms Tim McCarthy at the close of the 129th General Assembly.
The sergeant-at-arms is responsible for the security of all members and staff at the House of Representatives.
