The latest version of regulations on Lake Erie water use emerged in the House on Tuesday, but the initial reaction from Gov. John Kasich's administration suggest Rep. Lynn Wachtmann's legislation is anything but a done deal.
Gov. Kasich angered the lawmaker and other GOP officials last year when he vetoed the first version of the measure to implement the multi-state Great Lakes compact (HB 231 ) based on concerns that allowed for too much water diversions without a permit.
While the original package allowed businesses to draw up to 5 million gallons a day from Lake Erie without being subject to permitting requirements, the administration subsequently was considering a scaled-back measure setting that threshold at 2.5 million gallons a day. The governor also floated a reduction in withdrawals from ground water and rivers flowing into the lake compared to the first bill - from 2 million gallons a day to 1 million, and from 300,000 gallons per day to 100,000 when impacting "high quality" streams to the lake.

House Republicans touted their success in fending off primary challengers Wednesday, but Democrats believe they stand a good chance of beating several GOP incumbents who supported controversial restrictions to collective bargaining.
Speaker Bill Batchelder (R-Medina) said all of the caucus protected all of the incumbents during Tuesday's primary election.
"Ohio House Republicans have a strong record of defending our incumbent members, and we are pleased that all six of our members who faced challengers in the primary were successful, in many cases by wide margins," he said, omitting any mention of Rep. Jarrod Martin (R-Beavercreek), who was hammered by Greene County Commissioner Rick Perales. (See Gongwer Ohio Report, March 6, 2012)
"This shows that our work during this General Assembly and the course we have set for Ohio is one that Ohioans recognize as beneficial for the future of our state. We will continue to work to make Ohio a better place to live, work, raise a family and start a business, and we will accomplish this with the help of these dedicated and hard-working individuals," he said in a statement.
