Democrats, GOP at odds over redistricting costs
The Columbus Dispatch Tuesday April 24, 2012 7:06 AM
Legislative Democrats say they are still waiting for House Speaker William G. Batchelder to approve payments for the attorneys they hired to represent them in the redistricting process.
Rep. Clayton Luckie, D-Dayton, raised the issue during the Controlling Board meeting yesterday as the attorney general’s office asked for approval of $2.1million in special-counsel work.

Nothing simple

Republicans in the Ohio House are ready to take action this week on a Senate bill that would repeal one of their own creations, House Bill 194, a complicated elections bill passed just last year. The hope among Republican legislative majorities is to do something that has never happened in the General Assembly’s 209-year history: repeal a bill headed for a referendum.
There are good reasons for a repeal (beyond avoiding the likely defeat of H.B. 194 at the polls). Repeal would end the confusion that would be caused by a referendum campaign raising questions about issues such as early voting, provisional ballots and the duties of poll workers. Repeal also would set the stage for another effort to overhaul election laws, one that would improve access to the ballot instead of creating obstacles out of unfounded fears of voter fraud.

PERRY TWP. — Elected officials and Timken Co. executives touted it as proof that manufacturing jobs are returning to Ohio.

Monday morning the company officially broke ground on a $225 million expansion at the Faircrest steel mill that includes the first jumbo bloom vertical caster in North America.

It’s a symbol of rebirth in American manufacturing, Chairman Ward J. “Tim” Timken Jr., said Monday, then added: “But rebirth is only the appropriate word if you believe manufacturing went away.”

Democrats Object to Payment of GOP Redistricting Legal Fees

Hannah Report 4/23/12

Democrats on the Controlling Board Monday objected to a request for payment for special counsel by legislative Republicans because they said GOP leadership is refusing to pay for Democrats' legal expenses from the redistricting and reapportionment process.

Rep. Clayton Luckie (D-Dayton) told reporters that GOP leadership is refusing to pay $150,000 in legal expenses that had been allocated to the Democratic Party during the process of redrawing congressional and stateliness. Meanwhile, payments for special counsel used by Republicans during the process and to defend against three lawsuits that stemmed from that process were approved by the Controlling Board during Monday's hearing. http://www.hannah.com/DesktopDefaultPublic.aspx?type=hns&id=189200
