House GOP Trades Slaby for Slaby; Screening Panel to Meet on Last Vacancy

Hannah Report 4/19/12

House Speaker William Batchelder (R-Medina) announced Thursday that Marilyn Slaby will replace her husband, Lynn, in the 41st House District.

Marilyn Slaby previously served in the seat in 2004, when she was appointed to fill out the remaining term of then-Rep. Bryan Williams. She lost in the general election to Democrat Brian Williams.

“I am delighted that Mrs. Slaby will be once again joining the House Republican Caucus,” Batchelder said.  “She has a wealth of experience in state government and in the private sector, which will serve her constituents well in the Ohio House.”

Politics Notebook: Parties Spar On Lynch Tax Payments; Kasich Endorses Romney; Hagan Rips Committee Process
Gongwer 4/19/12

Rep. Matt Lynch had barely taken his seat on the Ohio House floor Wednesday when the Ohio Democratic Party pounced on an alleged history of tax delinquencies.
Several hours later, the Ohio Republican Party said the "reckless" comments from ODP Chairman Chris Redfern represented the worst in "gutter politics."
Mr. Redfern, in an emailed statement sent moments after Mr. Lynch took the oath of office, called the new lawmaker a "crony" and a "habitual tax cheat" who had racked up almost $50,000 in unpaid tax bills.
"While mistakes happen here and there, Lynch openly refuses to play by the same rules of fairness that the rest of us try our best to follow," Mr. Redfern said. "Lynch's disregard for his responsibility to pay tens-of-thousands of dollars in back taxes shows that he cannot be trusted to safeguard Ohio taxpayers' pocketbooks."

Slaby Gets Nod To Fill Husband's Seat; Screening Panel Announced For Other House GOP Vacancy
Former Rep. Marilyn Slaby will be appointed to fill the vacancy in the 41st House District that came open when her husband was appointed to the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio, Speaker Bill Batchelder (R-Medina) announced Thursday.
Ms. Slaby, a resident of Copley Township, was previously appointed to the seat in 2004 but lost her election bid to Democrat Brian Williams of Akron later that year. The district, represented since January 2011 by Lynn Slaby, was reapportioned by Republicans as the 38th House District to be a more favorable seat for the majority starting in this year's general elections.
Speaker Batchelder said Ms Slaby, a retired educator and former employee of the Summit County Board of Elections, was recommended by the county Republican Party so there was no need to convene a screening committee to vet applicants. C. Allen Nichols, a library director from Fairlawn, had also expressed interest in the appointment.
