Senate’s top aides awarded raises of 4%-33%
Chamber’s GOP leader defends timing as foes of SB 5 blast decision
By Jim Siegel
A massive state budget crunch did not stop state Senate leaders from giving out significant raises to many of their top caucus staff members, and that decision is making its way into the Issue 2 collective-bargaining debate.
Nineteen Senate staff members — 10 Republicans and nine Democrats — were given pay raises in July ranging from 4 to 33 percent, retroactive to Jan. 1.
Five staff members got $15,000 raises: Matt Schuler, chief of staff for Senate President Tom Niehaus; Liz Connolly, deputy chief of staff; Brian Perera, the Republicans’ finance director; Mike Rowe, the Democrats’ communication director; and Vincent Keeran, the Senate clerk.

Lawmaker charged with drunken driving loses committee post
By Jim Siegel
Rep. Jarrod Martin refused calls by Republican leaders to step down after his latest alcohol-related incident this summer, and now he has lost his committee leadership post.
House Speaker William G. Batchelder, R-Medina, yesterday removed Martin as chairman of the House Veterans Affairs Committee, replacing him with Rep. Terry Johnson, R-McDermott.
Martin, a two-term Republican from Beavercreek, faces charges of child endangerment and drunken driving following his July 22 arrest in Jackson County. State troopers who pulled Martin over said he went left of center and had a taillight out. Martin refused to submit to field sobriety tests; he has pleaded not guilty.
Martin also was involved in two alcohol-related incidents in 2010. In March of that year, he was found by Riffe Center security guards passed out in the parking garage on a vehicle belonging to Batchelder.

DUI charge costs local lawmaker his committee leadership job
Allegations against Beavercreek lawmaker a ‘distraction,’ speaker says.
Dayton Daily News
COLUMBUS — House Speaker William Batchelder on Wednesday removed Rep. Jarrod Martin, R-Beavercreek, as chairman of the Veterans’ Affairs Committee in the wake of charges pending against Martin for drunken driving and child endangering.
“It was a difficult decision to remove Rep. Martin as chairman but it is clear to him (Batchelder) that this caucus, which has accomplished wonderful things, regarded his (Martin’s) situation as a major distraction,” said Mike Dittoe, Batchelder’s spokesman.
The move will cost Martin $6,500 annually, the stipend he received as committee chairman in addition to his annual base salary of $60,584.
