Volunteers sought to lead review of Ohio’s constitution
Choosing well-qualified people to fill the 20 positions on the Ohio Constitutional Modernization Commission that are reserved for members of the public is fundamental to the commission’s success. If the right volunteers haven’t come forward yet, lawmakers running the commission were wise to extend the application deadline.
A spokesman for House Speaker and commission co-chair William G. Batchelder, R-Medina, said members found no lack of quality in the 150 applications submitted so far, but felt the initial application period, which ended Jan. 31, had been too short.

The Republican majority in the Ohio General Assembly flexed its political muscle and rammed through a bill that makes major changes to the state’s election laws. Opponents responded by putting the legislation up for a referendum vote in the November general election. Now, the Senate is attempting to repeal the controversial measure.
What’s going on? Simply put, Republicans have come to realize that they have created another S.B. 5 situation, and risk bringing Democrats and others to the polls in droves in the crucial presidential election.

98th District Temporary Replacement Named; Maag to Chair State Government Committee
Hannah Report 2/13/12
House Speaker William Batchelder (R-Medina) announced Monday that Geauga County Assistant Prosecutor Mary Brigid "Bridey" Matheney will be appointed to the vacant 98th House District seat and will serve until after the March primary, when the House GOP is expected to name the winner of the Republican primary to the seat.
The seat has been vacant since the beginning of the year, when Rep. Richard Hollington (R-Hunting Valley) resigned to become mayor of his hometown. Last month, Batchelder said the House Republican caucus would delay filling the seat until after a four-way primary was resolved by voters in March, but also left open the possibility of a temporary replacement so the district does not go without representation. Speaker Bill Batchelder on Monday named the second of two temporary members to fill vacancies pending the March 6 primary elections.
Geauga County Assistant Prosecuting Attorney Mary Brigid "Bridey" Matheney will fill the vacant 98th House District left open when former Rep. Richard Hollington won an unopposed election last fall as mayor of Hunting Valley.
"The House Republican Caucus is delighted that Mrs. Matheney will be the newest member of the Ohio House," Speaker Batchelder (R-Medina) said in a release. "She has a true passion for public service and has deep roots in her community that will serve the residents of the 98th House District well. I look forward to working with her during this interim period."
