October 4

Former Dayton Mayor Rhine McLin is part of a committee of Democrats asking the Ohio Supreme Court to permit a referendum on the 16 new U.S. House districts approved by the Republican-controlled legislature and signed into law by Republican Gov. John Kasich.
Ohioans for Fair Elections, the committee, contends that the sections of House Bill 319 creating the new districts are subject to a referendum.
The legislation also includes an appropriation for $2.75 million to help local boards of elections make changes needed for the new districts. The Ohio Constitution says that appropriations are not subject to referendums and also take effect immediately upon the governor’s signature.
